Abstract
Towards a unifying theory of video games : the analytical model of co-instanciation Until now, video games have not benefited from a generic and unified analytical model that allows for qualifying their specificity as interactive media, their functional logic, and the modes of engagement by users. Nevertheless, every video game organizes the vision, hearing, and sometimes the touch, to relate the participant with the game world. This makes possible decisions and actions by various effective ways : the avatar, the interface, the arrow pointing. In order to better comprehend how videogamers relate to and invest in simulated universes, the concepts of “instantiation” and “instance” have shown their utility. Employing a communication studies perspective and starting off from audiovisual studies, this paper introduces a theoretical framework for understanding the fundamental structure of video games. It shows how and in what way two instances pertaining to gaming define both the perceptions and actions of players. They enable the user’s embodiment in the world of the game through a movement of corporal integration that relies on a mechanism of “co-instantiation”, i.e. the mutual instantiation of a human being and a technological artefact. This essentially confers a new existential condition to the player.
